10/31/26: Halloween

The Halloween lawn decorations, with novelty objects and lights and sound effects that people think are humorous and entertaining, were getting to my nerves and spirits. So I concentrated on averting my eyes and ears from all of it, and finding colorful things to photograph instead.

Here’s the annual punkin sale. What do they do with the leftovers? A vendor told me that the extras are trucked out to a farm; the cows come running when they see pumpkins to munch on.

Here is a goodbye to our warm weather flowers: Calendula, Yarrow, Mexican Orange Blossom:

Anemones on a fence.

I cropped out all the identifying address points, but inside the new construction fence this old house has bushels of delicious apples all over the yard. In past years the owners would post a sign outdoors urging passersby to help themselves to fruit. For many years I would pick up apples for weeks and carry them home. Now the owners are gone, the old house is about to be demolished, and the city posted Schedule Removal signs on the apple tree and pear tree. Changing times.

Here below are some examples of colorful leaves, again leaving out the scary ornaments on the lawns.

These are Burning Bush, maple varieties, whitebeam berries, and smoke tree.

Here is Beauty Berry. This cluster was in deep shade, while the other berries were faded half white from sun or perhaps rain.

Witch hazel, showing golden leaves along with the waxy golden flowers with their delicate sweet fragrance; they’ll last all through winter.

These grape leaves were as bright as stained glass.

This feels like the last really sunny autumn day in all its festive dress. Tonight the clocks go back an hour — sunset will be 4:52 pm, and there’s rain on the way. It was good to have a chance to get out and catch the season’s change.
